Know Your Field and Be Brave to Take Risk, Find the Gaps and Follow Them
The ninth USERN talk took place with the inspiring lecture of the distinguished Iranian-American Prof. Ramin Sheikhattar, Chief, Department of Human Genetics,University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The conference hall was already filled with more than 80 students and colleagues and postgraduates from departments of biochemistry and genetics. How to make an impact in science was the title of the 45-minute lecture, grabbing attention of young scholars in the hall. Professor Sheikattar stated having chosen a right mentor or in his own words; Grinding Wings with Greatness, Knowing Your Feild in Science and Having Passion for What You do as three elements of being great in science. He emphasized the role of a good mentor, as he had himself found great ones after he was granted with an NIH grant and had the chance to work with a number of distinguished scientists in his field. Having started as a Neurochemist, he ultimately found passion for Genetics. He asked young scholars to find science their passion of day and night and reminded of his own passion to discover the role of RNA-polymerase 2 which led him to write letters to the lab centers culminating in his NIH grant reward.
Stating continuous and day to night study to find gaps in knowledge, Prof. Sheikkattar highlighted the role of hard work as a key to make an impact on science.
