USERN Keynote Lecture: UKL-04:
The universe: conception and evolution
By Bahram Mobasher
In this lecture we set for a journey to the depth of space and beginning of time, to a place where no one has been. A journey, which does not exhaust us physically, but enriches us intellectually. Recent advances in astronomy have made it possible to find answers to the most fundamental questions the mankind has pondered over the last many centuries. In this talk I will introduce you to the latest discoveries in modern Astronomy and Cosmology, which have fundamentally changed our view of the heavens- Is the Universe open or closed? How did the Universe start? What is the content of the Universe? What is the future of the Universe? What is dark matter and dark energy? We start from the beginning of the Universe and study its evolution, formation of galaxies, stars and planets over the last 13.8 billion years age of our Universe. Finally we discuss formation of the elements that are essential for life
