Humboldt foundation is a non-governmental scientific funding body to support research projects in doctorate and post doctorate levels within top universities in Germany. With the help of their scientific ambassadors and partners all over the world, the Humboldt society grants, thousands of dollars each year, to a selected array of applicants to live in Germany, learn the German language and conduct about 6000 research stays for doctorate and post doctorate projects, as well as receiving post graduate bonus opportunities to receive future support from the foundation. Sponsoring now more than 30 programs for various target groups, the Humboldt foundation has raised popular among Iranian scholars with the Georg Forster Research Fellowship, and a number of other prestigious research awards, bearing the names of Iranian top scientists in pharmacology, nanomedicine and chemistry, Professor Abbas Shafie being among one of the first Iranian to win this award.

Humboldt Rankings differentiate according to four major academic areas: Humanities and Social Sciences; Life Sciences; Natural Sciences and Engineering Sciences. Every stay is the result of a decision to select a host and research partner in Germany and makes a statement about the disciplines in which German research is so good that it wins the international contest for the best minds; and about which German scientists and scholars foster particularly intensive international contacts.
