Omid Faroxzad and Morteza Mahmoudi Lectured For More Than A Hundred And Eighty People Seated In The Omid Hall of Children's Hospital
Dr. Farokhzad started his talks with the application of nano labeled drugs targeted for treatment of cancers (DOXIL® for metastatic cervical cancer unresponsive to current chemotherapeutic agents), followed by the utility of nano- labeled drugs for specific treatment of atherosclerotic plaques. In addition, he had a glance at application allergy vaccines conjugated with nano-particles for treatment of peanut allergy. He explained that differences in surface charge of these particles as well as conjugation with other specific receptors like FCR will increase the bio-availability of these drugs. Dr. Farokhzad established his company with the name of BIND not only to raise the money but also to supervise the production of such complicated drugs with accuracy.
In follows, Dr. Mahmoudi had a glance at different protein concentration and confrontation in each microenvironment which in turn affects binding of nano-particles to these cells. Interestingly, he and his colleagues tested the effect of temperature on protein corona and its interaction with nano-particles. They found that with increase of temperature, the protein corona layer thickness may be reduced by 4 nanometers!! Even little changes of temperature can affect the protein corona and its interaction with nano-particles considerably. Accumulation of nano-particles in lysosomes is temp dependent; its of utmost importance in nano-particles which are made in hot environments like Gold nano-particles, and Iron Oxide Nano-particles.
Finally, he mentioned to the importance of team work and interdisciplinary approach in Nano-Technology. The goal of each project should be defined when you want to write the proposal of your research activity. Making a professional team is one of the obstacles of research in our country which we should address it. He thanked his senior colleague Dr. Shokrgozar for his strong team-work. He continued his talks with being hopeful while facing failures and considering the available resources. Negative results look like a puzzle which will be a beautiful scene together.
