DAVID KARASIK

USERN Advisory Board

Associate Professor, Faculty of Medicine, Bar Ilan University, Israel and Associate Scientist, Hebrew SeniorLife (Boston, MA)

Dr. Karasik holds a PhD degree in Anatomy and Anthropology (Tel Aviv University, Israel). Dr. Karasik’s research focuses on genetic mechanisms of aging-related diseases, such as osteoporosis, fractures, and muscle loss, studying both human populations and animal models. He was a founding member of the GEFOS and CHARGE consortia and is actively involved in the TopMED Initiative (USA). His recent efforts have focused on fine-mapping (by targeted sequencing) and functional follow-up of the GWAS-identified loci. The lab uses molecular biology techniques in vitro and the zebrafish (Danio rerio, ZF) as an in vivo model for functional follow-up of the human associations.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

The primary objective of our research is to understand the biology behind the function and pathology of complex physiological systems and metabolic processes. Our research focuses on identifying genes involved in the genetic variation of complex traits, including bone mass, muscle (lean) mass, and fatty liver.
