Jeff Holly

Jeff Holly is Professor of Clinical Science at the University of Bristol in the UK. He was born in London and studied for his first degree in physics and biochemistry at Queen Elizabeth College, University of London (1973) and his Ph.D. with Jack Ledingham and Hugh Makin in the Department of Medicine at the London Hospital Medical College (1982) working on the role of catecholamines in the regulation of blood pressure. In 1985 he joined the Endocrinology Department at St Bartholomews Hospital, London where he started working on the GH/IGF axis with Lesley Rees, John Wass and Michael Besser. In 1993 he moved to join Stafford Lightman in the Department of Medicine at the University of Bristol and subsequently moved to become the Director of Research of the Department of Surgery working with the Endocrine Surgeon, John Farndon. In 2006 he moved to the Department of Clinical Science at North Bristol. He was awarded the UK Society for Endocrinology Medal in 1993. He was the Programme Secretary of the UK Society for Endocrinology (1996-1999), Chairman of the UK Growth Factor Group (1991-present), and has served on the Executive Committee of The International Society for Insulin-Like Growth Factor Research since its inception in 1996 (Vice-President 1996-2007). He chaired the 5th International IGF Congress in Brighton in 1999 and was the elected chair of the Gordon Research Conference on IGFs in Ventura, CA in 2005. He is an author of over 300 papers and reviews. The main interests of his group have been the role of IGFs in chronic human diseases and in particular their role as metabolic regulators and mediators of the effects of nutrition. His group have also had a long-standing interest in the role of IGF binding proteins.
