The objective of our investigation is to understand the cellular mechanisms that explain the development of obesity-associated metabolic diseases. Our hypothesis is that hypothalamic autophagy, the process of lysosomal-mediated cytoplasmic degradation, is necessary for the homeostasis of this region of the brain and therefore of the whole body, by controlling energy intake. The cellular mechanisms that regulate this process are currently investigated in our laboratory. Our research on the mechanisms of autophagy has the objective of generating therapies for the treatment of obesity and obesity-associated metabolic diseases.
