Dr. Meisam Tabatabaei (1979) is a researcher, inventor, and entrepreneur. He received his PhD in Environmental Biotechnology from University Putra Malaysia (UPM) in 2009, through a joint research program between Kyushu Institute of Technology (KIT), Japan, and UPM. He is currently working as a Research Assist. Professor in Agricultural Biotechnology Research Institute of Iran (ABRII) and the founding Leader of Biofuel Research Team (BRTeam). He is also an invited lecturer of Lebanese University, University Technology Mara (UiTM), and Tehran University. He is fluent in English, Persian, and has a reasonable command of French. He also holds a Simultaneous Interpretation Diploma (Persian/English). Meisam has also been active as radio anchor for a number of national radio channels, i.e., Danesh, Goftego, and Javan.
Dr. Tabatabaei is the founding President of the Iranian Biofuels Society (IBS) under the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, the President of the Biofuels Committee in the Vice-Presidency for Science & Technology, and is also the President of the Liquid Biofuels Standards Committee at the National Standards Organization. Meisam received the prestigious National Medal of Appreciation from the president of Iran in March 2012 for his scientific contributions.
Meisam’s research focus is biofuels production from waste resources and nanotechnology. Other than being a regular reviewer for more than 70 international journals including Biotechnology Advances, Bioresource Technology, Journal of Membrane Science, Biosensors and Bioelectronics, Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, Applied Energy, and others, he is currently serving as the founding Editor-in-Chief for the Canadian-based ISI-SCOPUS-indexed Biofuel Research Journal (BRJ); the only Open Access journal in the field of energy and biomass which follows a Completely Free-of-Charge Publication Policy. BRJ's content is indexed in Thomson Reuters’s Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI). He has also served BioMed Research International as Lead Guest Editor.
Dr. Tabatabaei has been a United Nation Development Program (UNDP) collaborator working closely with SGP/GEF/UNDP in his capacity as the founding coordinator of BRTeam’s extension branch; Extension Group of Environmentalists (EGE), within the framework of SGP/GEF sponsored projects for the promotion of waste-oriented biodiesel in Iran. In 2016, Meisam acted as the chief manager of the first urban pilot project aimed at utilization of waste-oriented biofuels in Iran in an attempt to tackle Tehran`s high pollution levels. Since September 2016, Meisam also serves as the Coordinator of Iran’s National Committee bridging country`s collaboration with the Lancet Commission on Public Health and Climate Change.
Meisam has co-authored more than 150 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and has achieved more than 10 patents (h-index: 25, i10-index: 560). Dr. Tabatabaei’s publications have received 2223 citations (Source: Google Scholar; as of May 2017). He has supervised more than 25 graduate students.
Research:
Dr. Tabatabaei`s research focus has been on various aspects of different biofuels (i.e., biodiesel, biogas and bioethanol) from production processes (including reactor design and fabrication) to enhanced application of fuels using advanced sciences such as nanotechnology.
Development of novel approaches/strategies for economizing second and third generation biofuels through the integration of different disciplines has been among his major research activities during the past seven years. Besides, Meisam has been particularly fascinated by nanomaterials such as nanocatalysts. The application of novel nanocatalysts in biofuels to improve their combustion is an example.
