Position: Coordinator of the Pan African Network of Soil Biology and Fertility (AfNet)
Achievements:

Membership of the Network grew from 10 researchers in 1989 to over 400 researchers in 2006. Members scattered in the 23 countries in the 3 regions: East and Central, Southern and Western Africa
The Network was able to support research activities in over 100 benchmark sites scattered all over the continent
Under my coordination, several research projects were secured from major donors such as The Rockefeller Foundation, IDRC, CIDA, USAID, Challenge Programme for Water and Food (CPWF), Desert Margin Programme (DMP), The African Development Bank (AfDB), OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), Volkswagen Foundation, CTA, ASARECA, CORAF/WECARD, among others.
Publication of several books and a Special Issue in Nutrient Cycling and Agroecosystems Journal, the TSBF Newsletter, The Comminutor and several brochures.
Successfully organized 3 major international symposia where scientists from the region exchanged experiences on improving agricultural production views
In terms of capacity building, the Network organized 8 short term training courses in modeling, participatory research, gender analysis, nutrient monitoring and use of isotope techniques in agriculture research where over 200 scientists from across Africa were trained.
I supervised over 30 PhD and MSc students and taught at several universities in the region.
During my leadership as the Network Coordinator, linkages of AfNet with national agriculture research systems (NARES), advanced research networks (AROs) local and foreign universities, other CG Centres, other Networks in the region have also been strengthened.

1982 – 2000: International Fertilizer Development Centre (IFDC) based at the ICRISAT Sahelian Centre, Niger
Position:Principal Soil Scientist and Leader of the Soil Research of IFDC in the drylands of West Africa
Achievements:

I was responsible for research on land degradation with special emphasis on the maintenance, restoration and enhancement of soil fertility.
In collaboration with other IFDC staff, I was at the forefront in developing the microdose technology that has helped increase use of fertilizers as well as increase food production among the smallholder farmers in the West African drylands.
My research on water and nutrient management helped show that smallholder farmers can achieve both improved fertilizer and water use efficiency if they judiciously combined nutrient and water management.
Other research focused on improving agronomic effectiveness and efficiency of locally available rock phosphates in the region.
During this period, I was also the leader of the West African Fertilizer Management Network involving 14 African countries and more than 20 institutions in the region
