A. Personal Statement:
My career is dedicated to promote clinical and research development in Primary Immunodeficiencies (PIDs) in Peru, to provide the best possible care to PID-affected Peruvian patients.
In June 2008, I began my residency in Allergy and Clinical Immunology in Edgardo Rebagliati Martins National Hospital (Lima, Peru), where my interest in PIDs started. In November 2010, I did an Observership in the Immunology Division of Children’s Hospital of Boston, where I observed a higher number of PID affected patients than in my hospital. Then, I realized that the main problem in Peru was the lack of medical awareness about PIDs. After returning to Peru, in April 2011, we organized the first PID Workgroup in my hospital (Immunology, Infectology, Hematology, Genetics, and Clinical Pediatrics physicians) to increase awareness, early diagnosis, appropriate treatment and timely report of PID affected Peruvian patients. Since then we have worked hardly to achieve these goals. In September 2011, with the support of the IUIS, we organized the First Peruvian Educational Meeting in PIDs, which was a very encouraging event. In March 2012, we organized the Peruvian Group of Primary Immunodeficiencies (PERUGID). During the last 5 years I have attended many international congresses and schools, to increase my knowledge about PID and to meet experts who could help me in the management of PID Peruvian patients, especially by providing molecular diagnosis or giving me suggestions for patient care.
Every day is a new journey to improve PID work in Peru. Although there are many limitations to our work, especially by economic and technological issues, every week or month we receive great news: more people are interested to work in PIDs, more patients are identified with suspicion of PID, more patient samples are accepted in international centres for genetic studies, more patients receive HSCT, new possibilities to establish agreements with international centres for patient care appear, etc.
One year ago we established the Jeffrey Modell Foundation Network in Peru. Our main plans are: to increase PID awareness in Peruvian physicians, to promote universal access to treatment with immunoglobulin, to set up a newborn screening program for Severe Combined Immunodeficiencies (SCID), and to increase the number of patients receiving timely Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT). Our PID team in Peru has grown from 6 members in 2011 to 17 members in 2017.
